<br />
It's done! Thank you so much to everyone who contributed blocks. I still can't believe my spur of the moment idea turned into a quilt!!!!!<br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyHV-dEz_Ln6toMd9vUvJFZMqs1pjj7iSHVDA9-HfK_VHoEIElUouC9B9QUJroicqUgud8etwKgBy1Cv8XHU5rJhcrfZWlDHmW5K7t9e3mNtcMq2UTcj7xY44RDyHKF7PBTTIoLcg5Z7B8/s1600/close+up.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyHV-dEz_Ln6toMd9vUvJFZMqs1pjj7iSHVDA9-HfK_VHoEIElUouC9B9QUJroicqUgud8etwKgBy1Cv8XHU5rJhcrfZWlDHmW5K7t9e3mNtcMq2UTcj7xY44RDyHKF7PBTTIoLcg5Z7B8/s1600/close+up.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And as you can see a couple of cushions for Aneela's daughters. There are so many blocks left over, I really am in awe of everyone's generosity. They will all be stitched up into quilts for our local hospitals, who do their best to give all patients in oncology and all the premies a quilt to make their stay a little happier.<br />
<br />
I really feel with this I just had an idea, but that my fellow quilters actually did the heavy lifting, so thank you so much to:<br />

You guys rock!!!!! Keep spreading the word and I'll keep trying to get back to everyone who's helping out (sorry, got to sleep and work so responses aren't always instantaneous!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://the-fabric-stash.com/"><img alt="http://the-fabric-stash.com/" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBQqinBJpSYFmgDDbLvXxO39RLbCU_Oo68KydpHNzQQDQhoiBRlfwrVGkmlXHBuo4dBmGdLZGgjV-PHgps6o1K3s0-1xvsLl0p2wSZuSv5fsqyFqZCu5JOLSb6F_xEMQz7gbxvNcAZXtQD/s1600/The+Fabric+Stash.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
When I first put out a call for blocks I'd also mentioned that I was looking for stores that could possibly donate fabric. Well, the quilting community is amazing so I also wanted to say a big thank you to Janice at <a href="http://the-fabric-stash.com/">the Fabric Stash</a> who is sending some backing fabric my way.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I have a little business of my own and have always worked for small independent companies so I know that margins are tight and every sale is the difference between.. well you know, we've all been there, right? I always try to give the best, friendliest, most responsive service I can, and to me with online shopping that's going to win me over every time. What can be more amazing than reaching out and offering fabric for a project that I hope is really close to all of us. So please, if you're going to do a little fabric shopping this weekend, show the <a href="http://the-fabric-stash.com/">Fabric Stash</a> some love! Not only is Janice helping out with this quilt for Aneela, she's also got a discount code going right now for her fabric (hoeyfan20 valid through June 21). And her shipping rates to Canada are really good (I may have tested that!)<br />
<br />
*** big edit: Janice has extended her Aneela Hoey sale until the 21st. Let's clean her out y'all!! <br />
<br />

She hadn't been on social media for a while and this was the heartbreaking answer to why she wasn't around much. I feel like the fabric designers we love give so much to the quilting community, why not take the time to give a little back to Aneela and her family now. And so, the #quiltforaneela.<br />
<br />
My idea was to make Aneela a quilt using <a href="http://www.canoeridgecreations.com/2013/02/xo-quilt-tutorial.html">this brilliant tutorial</a> from Megan at Canoe Ridge Creations. It's free and fast, perfect, right? If you'd like to make an x or an o or both, that would be awesome. Two things, though. Please make the body of the x or o in Aneela's fabric (all one print or scrappy). And please make the background white (no specific white, some of my blocks are kona snow, some Michael Miller white).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSlYxA3uxiGK3UBxoIEj6QPCNsC5iGIdieQlTANrSaUQcD3qCZ9k-UihKPBpNlmYge4m7RXKDL7UJHk65VSs78bBzWWxh8Vpx3qy1-JWyFzZX8dG7FKJ2E2iCSFUeUmvDVxQ0YUlTZD6y5/s1600/blocks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSlYxA3uxiGK3UBxoIEj6QPCNsC5iGIdieQlTANrSaUQcD3qCZ9k-UihKPBpNlmYge4m7RXKDL7UJHk65VSs78bBzWWxh8Vpx3qy1-JWyFzZX8dG7FKJ2E2iCSFUeUmvDVxQ0YUlTZD6y5/s1600/blocks.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
If you'd like to join in but don't have enough fabric for the four 5" squares called for in the original block pattern (my Aneela Hoey fabric normally gets used up right away!), I've come up with an idea. Mini blocks! These half size blocks finish up at 4½" (5" with seam allowances) and are super cute.<br />
<br />
For the mini blocks you'll need:<br />
<br />
4 squares of Aneela's prints cut at 2 3/4" x 2 3/4"<br />
8 squares of white fabric cut at 1½" x 1½"<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS0fBG6q77dj-QKBKMqGBv9bI5420tPj40G9k4aC59r66FpOQBGRDa71czsXU6A27FWXAWviOt3HT72YOEREYE1xiiMtTUwJnd872k8CO020gVej0Kw10c9NYPFGhMBFFpZlJySQgokEhO/s1600/tute+one.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS0fBG6q77dj-QKBKMqGBv9bI5420tPj40G9k4aC59r66FpOQBGRDa71czsXU6A27FWXAWviOt3HT72YOEREYE1xiiMtTUwJnd872k8CO020gVej0Kw10c9NYPFGhMBFFpZlJySQgokEhO/s1600/tute+one.jpg" height="512" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Draw a diagonal line connecting two corners on each of the white squares.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdVQ-F7AnW43MgX3hAY5ohRcAXAp3Yi91jCCS-E8HV2Sr2a20Ou2OHIxz6Hxknn_8a9wlLV3lUf7m3McOXavJdRPmZCwfPGrwiZBnDKO3o9xtXWwxWQC0X6wk28PCzIm2gEg6wc3XgA6YE/s1600/tute+twon.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdVQ-F7AnW43MgX3hAY5ohRcAXAp3Yi91jCCS-E8HV2Sr2a20Ou2OHIxz6Hxknn_8a9wlLV3lUf7m3McOXavJdRPmZCwfPGrwiZBnDKO3o9xtXWwxWQC0X6wk28PCzIm2gEg6wc3XgA6YE/s1600/tute+twon.jpg" height="512" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Sew two white squares onto each print square along the marked line.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLaP8kOUEJt1-F5Zb4TuAGOj56wYu8Rwf4WmaMtZRQaXjJW2nXVOW8ywC7QpkJH4hbbkkaU22mxvLbP3gcXBqQouUBxAZAn0pOx30wepFjQl6cJMZmeadv_IvSV_z2MBfvrxtZMP8Fl7UC/s1600/photo+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLaP8kOUEJt1-F5Zb4TuAGOj56wYu8Rwf4WmaMtZRQaXjJW2nXVOW8ywC7QpkJH4hbbkkaU22mxvLbP3gcXBqQouUBxAZAn0pOx30wepFjQl6cJMZmeadv_IvSV_z2MBfvrxtZMP8Fl7UC/s1600/photo+3.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Trim off the extra fabric then press the the triangles out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8BODSW3AvyTeFi5-HGPlgVLm0g-8Yl6K45T2hzPYVZoKiW1A4l0T5j6IPotV3aLSWsARLxzFAcmlm7zjy_Vx7EKNYJ_UpG7-cn6_xifheIW1o4Vm-4bN-v_eqP7ZceExXJUmOXRqnJPmK/s1600/x.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8BODSW3AvyTeFi5-HGPlgVLm0g-8Yl6K45T2hzPYVZoKiW1A4l0T5j6IPotV3aLSWsARLxzFAcmlm7zjy_Vx7EKNYJ_UpG7-cn6_xifheIW1o4Vm-4bN-v_eqP7ZceExXJUmOXRqnJPmK/s1600/x.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Now you just have to decide if you want an X...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9tI7p6keh426decxbKyIGTZEq8xjpu3lJpk7uuXJlQU10YnJAfoRlHGo5mKyYHllQ9ib5WWEEaJhVoWpdCoJge2CjdT6pDBhu4NZb3lGW6xE2JvaH4DSM76aXPijrJShDEP_DehVBOfHH/s1600/photo+2-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9tI7p6keh426decxbKyIGTZEq8xjpu3lJpk7uuXJlQU10YnJAfoRlHGo5mKyYHllQ9ib5WWEEaJhVoWpdCoJge2CjdT6pDBhu4NZb3lGW6xE2JvaH4DSM76aXPijrJShDEP_DehVBOfHH/s1600/photo+2-1.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Or an O! And stitch the sub units together with a ¼" seam allowance.<br />
<br />
<br />
Now, what if your pieces are even smaller, or you're working with jellyroll strips? Don't worry, there is a solution!<br />
<br />
For this method I just took photos of the sub units, so you'll need to multiply everything by 4.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCzx8Th-no-CKv5vkKU9GlNLX0BYBdQmb9-5spUjF_k3Wuxq2kdIvy9-RBAcaLxU_3EsumvFQjCF6aLUZXLD1NLYtiudt05QMe4CWGmi4akEL1_oYUZ8dvGY6nMc3XU-JOM69KDVPjytLX/s1600/alt+one.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCzx8Th-no-CKv5vkKU9GlNLX0BYBdQmb9-5spUjF_k3Wuxq2kdIvy9-RBAcaLxU_3EsumvFQjCF6aLUZXLD1NLYtiudt05QMe4CWGmi4akEL1_oYUZ8dvGY6nMc3XU-JOM69KDVPjytLX/s1600/alt+one.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
For one sub unit you'll need a rectangle of print 2¼" x 4" and one square 2½"x 2½". Cut the square in half on the diagonal.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqGOWaBNMHPTNNGTmpXWi_P0kgcPDfludHNK8arwCzcVbYTgCmnXiyzq4dOe1qAY-Rqpi31qcQEYqXCera00-24PECk4k91EWKvzBWUOC4Qjueh0dYjLETMqlN4VRE5ggic0KOJi1QmAZ_/s1600/alt+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqGOWaBNMHPTNNGTmpXWi_P0kgcPDfludHNK8arwCzcVbYTgCmnXiyzq4dOe1qAY-Rqpi31qcQEYqXCera00-24PECk4k91EWKvzBWUOC4Qjueh0dYjLETMqlN4VRE5ggic0KOJi1QmAZ_/s1600/alt+2.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Centre the triangles on the print strip and stitch down using a ¼" seam allowance.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5BXtrd_Hfl2vMq2N6xUiRn20ppPKdAZMHQFXqQIwYMRANLlxVxthT8o7i_ZzEADNzmp0qdlj_2knJX5BLARfdB6U565XaYycf1qMwH8Js5HAAL4VXhC-qDGVzL345r5suKLB75TD41VmS/s1600/alt+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5BXtrd_Hfl2vMq2N6xUiRn20ppPKdAZMHQFXqQIwYMRANLlxVxthT8o7i_ZzEADNzmp0qdlj_2knJX5BLARfdB6U565XaYycf1qMwH8Js5HAAL4VXhC-qDGVzL345r5suKLB75TD41VmS/s1600/alt+3.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Press the triangles out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifyFVHhC9N8HubsWYULumtqnR3fmxJf1OzbDRvZnPeXyqqfn41jnvcbVTt05MstFPKIchQm62A7r6ZowsebHjazr3qouzBFAk-qt2q51ZTshPzzVXCLJyi4nF-_EWtaxzRd-rt24WS-OfN/s1600/alt+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifyFVHhC9N8HubsWYULumtqnR3fmxJf1OzbDRvZnPeXyqqfn41jnvcbVTt05MstFPKIchQm62A7r6ZowsebHjazr3qouzBFAk-qt2q51ZTshPzzVXCLJyi4nF-_EWtaxzRd-rt24WS-OfN/s1600/alt+4.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Now fold the blue rectangle in half along its length, finger pressing to get a crease.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-gIcc_s2U2-0RsJGsgCkpNxv8PCDsLiroYUgf2zulM2oT0TMNC-137eEHuhl-EV0C7eUd4HJjGN-z0T_bYPxfKxcy6mwkhZqdLd-yaQwjMwzPwjLr7yKChtD8scXdeKjyGwl_MR2MSDPl/s1600/trim+one.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-gIcc_s2U2-0RsJGsgCkpNxv8PCDsLiroYUgf2zulM2oT0TMNC-137eEHuhl-EV0C7eUd4HJjGN-z0T_bYPxfKxcy6mwkhZqdLd-yaQwjMwzPwjLr7yKChtD8scXdeKjyGwl_MR2MSDPl/s1600/trim+one.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Use the creased centre line as a guide to trim the sub unit down along 2 sides. If you have a square ruler it should have a diagonal line that you can run along the pressed line. We'll be trimming these units to 2 3/4" so make sure you don't cut off too much!<br />

Flip your piece around and trim the other 2 sides to get a nice 2 3/4" x 2 3/4" square. Now make another 3 and decide if you want an x or o.<br />
<br />
Thank you so much to anyone who wants to send blocks!!!<br />
<br />
<br />
My goal with this is to have a quilt to Aneela as soon as possible, so I'm hoping blocks can be on their way to me by July 1st. I'm not sure what the response will be like, you never know how big things can get when we all rally! So my plan is to make up to a 90" x 90" (100 original size blocks or 400 minis, or a mix) for Aneela. If I get less blocks, the quilt will be smaller. If I get more I will use the blocks to make quilts for our local oncology patients. I'll update as blocks arrive!<br />
<br />
Speaking of arriving... once you have blocks ready to send, leave a comment here or contact me on instagram (chelseafr) and I'll send you my address. <br />
<br />
hugs,<br />

Do I even blog anymore? It's been a while, right? So, what's been going on... I started a new job (part time at a quilt shop!)... went away for a long weekend... because it was my birthday! (yesterday. I'm officially old)... broke a toe... had to stop 2 quilts in the cutting stage while I waited for more fabric... and tried some paper piecing.<br />

I've done paper piecing before, but never really loved it. I love the detail you can achieve, though. So when Kristy at <a href="http://quietplay.blogspot.ca/">Quiet Play</a> was looking for pattern testers for her new paper piecing patterns I jumped at the chance. Trying new things keeps the brain from turning to mush, right?<br />

I'm pretty impressed! Despite my best intentions to get going on this as soon as the pattern hit my inbox, I just kept putting it off. Until today, that is. A few hours at the machine later and I have a cute mini quilt for my sewing room. And it wasn't all that painful. I had to unpick a bit, but I remembered a tip I'd read to baste iffy pieces first before commiting to sewing them with those teeny stitches, so it wasn't as bad as it could be.<br />

Not as bad as the tidying job I really should be tackling. One scrap vomit, one scrappy trip, an x+, bee blocks, paper piecing, and not fully unpacking from retreat equals one horrible mess. At least the cats like it.<br />

<br />
The x+ block has made a huge resurgence lately, and like the scrappy trip along, I'm jumping on that bandwagon, too. These are a lot slower going than the scrappy trip, so I won't be posting a finished top anytime soon. But I'm loving playing around with fabric combinations, spending the time to get every one just right.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9QWC_BJndym3DpBMZ7xC83U54M8nq5-QjZliwJNMCoogh4SbvmwLpX74Bb46wbnyScKf9xKiop6Ku5F5MS1XD6R5L9TQE7Zx-qOR9urMjkMwHnQnKaGoiGnwM2SJc3xKFkeNT4nSdLOKZ/s1600/do+good.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9QWC_BJndym3DpBMZ7xC83U54M8nq5-QjZliwJNMCoogh4SbvmwLpX74Bb46wbnyScKf9xKiop6Ku5F5MS1XD6R5L9TQE7Zx-qOR9urMjkMwHnQnKaGoiGnwM2SJc3xKFkeNT4nSdLOKZ/s640/do+good.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
Coincidentally our February blocks for happiness at do good stitches are also x+ blocks. Bigger and in a more controlled colour scheme, but still as awesome.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsp_BTbXL9BQEr97pTTM9HVRvNryce51WNQeuwQjF34DXKPP3sW6gxm8VXUC_IA3x_sr0f7lARHfGF2Zzjm6htYF6nkXWamNtOMS2ggpZvEZXET7iiJ6wAWYAl2kPFPHhXMRePRjUgOplv/s1600/close+alternate.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="512" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsp_BTbXL9BQEr97pTTM9HVRvNryce51WNQeuwQjF34DXKPP3sW6gxm8VXUC_IA3x_sr0f7lARHfGF2Zzjm6htYF6nkXWamNtOMS2ggpZvEZXET7iiJ6wAWYAl2kPFPHhXMRePRjUgOplv/s640/close+alternate.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
But back to the blocks for my project. After all, it's all about me, me, me! These are really challenging me to make interesting fabric choices and to carefully consider scale and value.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Recently Rachel over at <a href="http://www.stitchedincolor.com/2013/01/helpful-fabrics.html">Stitched in Color </a>wrote about building a fabric stash and the addition of helpful fabrics. I loved reading her thoughts on this because it's something I've been thinking about a lot lately, too. When I got back in to quilting a few years ago my stash was mostly multicoloured, look at me fabrics. The star prints of the collection. And nothing played well together. I've been slowly building my stash of helpers, but it's hard when they cost just as much as those glamazons.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRPX78AWdH2RmT61napgTZPZlupUs0N9OYoz_MajO3wusTRVL1flGLdzWCSuyVVITV8YzAcXTyTHFxvAyCqx8ZphG2F4Fp0Uy9y-cW02D8yiL8vMgjNaSCYmYlshMHJkuIuF13smcOxGv9/s1600/japanese+fabrics.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRPX78AWdH2RmT61napgTZPZlupUs0N9OYoz_MajO3wusTRVL1flGLdzWCSuyVVITV8YzAcXTyTHFxvAyCqx8ZphG2F4Fp0Uy9y-cW02D8yiL8vMgjNaSCYmYlshMHJkuIuF13smcOxGv9/s640/japanese+fabrics.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I've also been really studying the fabric choices of quilters I admire and trying to dissect what makes their work so dynamic to me. This has meant really looking at what I'm buying and why. I still love those bold florals, but I realize I don't love them so much in quilts. What I do love are text, 30s, and quirky Japanese prints. Fuchsia and acid green. A little bit of clash. I really need to print out a picture of my ideal bundle, block, or stash, and tape it to the computer. No more impulse shopping, everything will fit the plan. Yeah right!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Welcome to my stop on the something new sampler blog hop! I've got a bit of a problem when it comes to quilting - scraps. They're everywhere, bins here, bags, there. Because I want my hobby to be as low footprint as it can (hard when we're talking shipping, dyes and non-organic fabrics) I don't throw out <u>any</u> scraps. The teeny tiny ones are slowly stuffing a dog bed. Today's project tackles some of the slightly bigger ones.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH3_D6xSrltWDB00byIpJx14dd5sQyXEMTt0DtK7o_X_CxYbsaahnBSv4FPj4U4Rzjmt0eyJc4IPCsoA44bBDx37-NdT5DzR6TjdTVzPBdbGM1CGHmcnfZpBNy0yCAtOY6vtmUOhHjBtgS/s1600/gather+scraps.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH3_D6xSrltWDB00byIpJx14dd5sQyXEMTt0DtK7o_X_CxYbsaahnBSv4FPj4U4Rzjmt0eyJc4IPCsoA44bBDx37-NdT5DzR6TjdTVzPBdbGM1CGHmcnfZpBNy0yCAtOY6vtmUOhHjBtgS/s640/gather+scraps.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You can use this technique with any of your scraps. Go monochrome, build a rainbow, choose a colour scheme. I decided to go the monochrome route since a few recent projects has left my bins overflowing with aqua scraps.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaGzTja5VJhClryOcERQ1RlJwufHp_Js8Yeeeuydl2chwAss9Ah8tr-CVcFBR_cyQe8t9aT7K0DlHr2BFvWtWXqhGNfKzFlkoiHKF8TeIdae-p1m7JjYMG0WkFibx6G4Lvb4mII9es5Xji/s1600/sew+slab.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaGzTja5VJhClryOcERQ1RlJwufHp_Js8Yeeeuydl2chwAss9Ah8tr-CVcFBR_cyQe8t9aT7K0DlHr2BFvWtWXqhGNfKzFlkoiHKF8TeIdae-p1m7JjYMG0WkFibx6G4Lvb4mII9es5Xji/s640/sew+slab.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Once you've chosen your scraps, just start sewing them together! Channel those improv skills, don't worry about perfect ¼" seams. We're building new, more useable yardage (ok, maybe fat quarter-age) out of otherwise difficult to use scraps. Don't worry about seams matching up or edges being even. We can cut around that! I don't normally press my seam open but I found it essential with this technique. Anything that makes our new scrap base fabric flatter is awesome! I can't use steam in my iron because of a really high iron concentration in our well water (hello rust spots), but if you can, steam will be your friend.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwccY0nL-YBNtKQGjbavXz4Xlhsd5HyVQrTyMp5-SrzRpL-YLnWqG-oi7IRuLZdapMHgjoqDaDhZaI_A3S4B4oc0aPDajsZPBtPId5DdfUKZhLnbo8ZGMEbtYGPBZQBWgvIHG9wK2S9JJc/s1600/cut+rectangles.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwccY0nL-YBNtKQGjbavXz4Xlhsd5HyVQrTyMp5-SrzRpL-YLnWqG-oi7IRuLZdapMHgjoqDaDhZaI_A3S4B4oc0aPDajsZPBtPId5DdfUKZhLnbo8ZGMEbtYGPBZQBWgvIHG9wK2S9JJc/s640/cut+rectangles.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We're going to be cutting four pieces 3"x7½". You might want to think about this while building your new fabric. If your scraps are really small it might be easier to sew together only enough pieces for one 3"x7½" segment at a time. If they're larger you can sew a much larger piece of scrap base and cut them all at once. I sort of combined the two. I sewed enough scraps together to cut the first three pieces then figured out where I had to add on in order to cut the fourth.<br />
<br />
Now we need some sashing. Since the large pieces are so scrappy I decided to go with a solid for my sashing, one I just happened to have in my scrap bin. You'll need to cut four pieces 1½"x7½".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTlp-XGygpRMO5faXwJx5RtL2ImG-rptcQky-kTm7S8dvU2jq_tvuJBi88E9oPsQKDKfsoGGI2_Zelt6p7ZaVM5UrXFfM6QdjOHatYU_sWudpFzpYiqehmyuCGxZzUlyE8KcMly2XphBd5/s1600/finished+block.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTlp-XGygpRMO5faXwJx5RtL2ImG-rptcQky-kTm7S8dvU2jq_tvuJBi88E9oPsQKDKfsoGGI2_Zelt6p7ZaVM5UrXFfM6QdjOHatYU_sWudpFzpYiqehmyuCGxZzUlyE8KcMly2XphBd5/s640/finished+block.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Sew one sashing piece to each scrap base segment, then sew all the sashing + scrap base segments together. Done! Now I know that a rectangular block (in this case 7"x14" finished) isn't the norm, but the scrap base technique can be used with so many other blocks. My advice is to keep the scale larger and the piecing simple.<br />
<br />

<br />
I actually finished this Tuesday, and somehow now it's Friday, and again I'm behind. Again.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSnKxDWitqv-x77oOCqEyS9hUjuhHA6KXje7qW8hF17Zha3amXf47_KlQVIrLHp2cVX9id0ylwBucGCXtbQPxbcAp_-CXn_d9Guq80YEddTTmLjmO6UK04YSlbHt3p5nlmRuuwezmuHi08/s1600/on+groun+d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSnKxDWitqv-x77oOCqEyS9hUjuhHA6KXje7qW8hF17Zha3amXf47_KlQVIrLHp2cVX9id0ylwBucGCXtbQPxbcAp_-CXn_d9Guq80YEddTTmLjmO6UK04YSlbHt3p5nlmRuuwezmuHi08/s640/on+groun+d.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
But I guess I'm also kind of ahead of the game since this is going to be a gift for friends we're visiting in Toronto in April. Watch me start quilting it the night before we leave!!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh_zlWU-iRX7sVVOfYZkysYcn2O30H8RgfAKP-Y1u7ESgzER_K-AHc9hW5n7O_azvMo-YX-IZI7bd9m7YfU-WkE5u8-jyqDSsm25QlmcT4Orf92Dt-_rkXKv9fDMPUdg7a71dd6pJ8LQzv/s1600/far.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh_zlWU-iRX7sVVOfYZkysYcn2O30H8RgfAKP-Y1u7ESgzER_K-AHc9hW5n7O_azvMo-YX-IZI7bd9m7YfU-WkE5u8-jyqDSsm25QlmcT4Orf92Dt-_rkXKv9fDMPUdg7a71dd6pJ8LQzv/s640/far.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">the perspective is really weird on this. the quilt is 6' across, the dog a lot less than that</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I love that this quilt along was so spontaneous, so no pressure. I love that it finally made me click with instagram (I'm chelseafr). I wish it had put more of a dent in my un-loveds. Maybe a scrap vomit is in my future?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjevtHjYwS5J4PLTR6A_OicKEQ4AUt4ewgDH8gx-mxgeUxY6MSoLI5I0-PJST6HM5lSnhlDKYjgX5CR0zGT753fxDrFle0KStlGVxrLNBt3CPuvI7qO-Xl2GWylRTgWLLXrVPlcojRvvKIh/s1600/close.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjevtHjYwS5J4PLTR6A_OicKEQ4AUt4ewgDH8gx-mxgeUxY6MSoLI5I0-PJST6HM5lSnhlDKYjgX5CR0zGT753fxDrFle0KStlGVxrLNBt3CPuvI7qO-Xl2GWylRTgWLLXrVPlcojRvvKIh/s640/close.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Not that I'm saying any of these fabrics are particularly ugly. (Not that Amy Butler or Lizzy House et al are reading this and will get offended). I'm just kind of over them. At least they can be used unlike lipsticks I'm bored of. Why did I ever think frost was a good finish? <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5c5Zvx8yTVhQcrdB_ANH2EovRj9U6pdSPsvgpDxcGXOKhPXwZtVV3aB4VHmmGIk7QD-bWU4nLSyyY5w23-MQTNyZCcGYiblbnKjGCZjbD5OtBVpOIu3vHd2hHKX85-LoXbRumd5C0bQBq/s1600/for+katie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5c5Zvx8yTVhQcrdB_ANH2EovRj9U6pdSPsvgpDxcGXOKhPXwZtVV3aB4VHmmGIk7QD-bWU4nLSyyY5w23-MQTNyZCcGYiblbnKjGCZjbD5OtBVpOIu3vHd2hHKX85-LoXbRumd5C0bQBq/s640/for+katie.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And because I love it so much, here's a sneaky peek of a quilt I'm quilting for <a href="http://kateyz.blogspot.ca/">Katie</a>. So much yummy grey to fill with quilting!<br />
<br />
happy friday,<br />

Then join in the blog hop for <i>The Something New Sampler</i>!<br />

Each week, one or two bloggers will present a block tutorial with an uncommonly used technique. There will be a total of 9 blocks presented. And, just to mix it up, we're going with a funky modern block size - 7" x 14"! We'll have plenty of suggestions on how to use this block shape along the way. There's no need for our modern blocks to always be square :)<br />
<br />
Here's our schedule:<br />
<br />

At the end, link up a blog post or flickr photo with <i>anything</i> you've done from the sampler series, even if it's just one block! There are two categories for prizes:<br />
<br />
- finished projects, winners will be chosen by popular vote<br />
<i>"finished" includes an entirely completed smaller project, like a pillow, table runner, mini quilt, etc.</i><br />
<i>pieced quilt tops also count as "finished", even if not quilted</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
- participation prizes, winners will be chosen by a random number generator<br />
<i>link up any progress you've made!</i><br />

<br />
I've jumped on the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/scrappytripalong/">scrappy trip</a> around the world bandwagon. I can't quite get the name right, though. Scrappy strip trip? Trip around the strip? Faster Pussycat?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpbJS0nOxduz94KphqhJGg9Tjv1spjIDn-IaJ8rFIKwwDHPw9MNXE7RdoOuqyI3w0WB7BWhxo8HbJUWZJahR7xQrQVym_8lBelxjtv3mN5QNWa1d8CJObrJJbl2EXIcO41BFCaX8fobIT-/s1600/scrap+around+two.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="427" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpbJS0nOxduz94KphqhJGg9Tjv1spjIDn-IaJ8rFIKwwDHPw9MNXE7RdoOuqyI3w0WB7BWhxo8HbJUWZJahR7xQrQVym_8lBelxjtv3mN5QNWa1d8CJObrJJbl2EXIcO41BFCaX8fobIT-/s640/scrap+around+two.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Anyway, it's fun and fast, and it's nice to start the year with a new project. Especially since I decided to use my scraps (of which I don't have a lot of the long strip variety) and my un-loveds. Now I guess I could call my own version the ugly quilt, but I'm calling it the non-ugly quilt instead. Because <strike>none of these are </strike>most of these aren't ugly. In fact I wanted all of these fabrics in my life at one point or another. The just don't work with what I'm feeling now. So this is perfect. A fun,easy stash buster to use up the stuff I don't want to look at anymore! I'm having so much fun with this, I might actually make one after with fabrics I love. <br />
<br />
So... I need to come up with a new sign off for a new year. All I can think of for now is "beat that babe", the annoying catch phrase my sister and I used to yell at each other after throwing down a particularly awful hand at cards. I think I need to keep thinking...<br />

<br />
So, guess what I've been working on?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvYFasAyhoNy84EeeRsdUZZneXUoZcBWWBtBB3ReKcPvcs9VvbuaDI7ifrqDbzJkzpCuQ8tVzw8C2Kn3yxGAd-VF4gmjuAB5uHL_ImUoixmniwArCr_MWcRq4qIpzPSTWk9STdXyLqrBF1/s1600/full+in+window.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvYFasAyhoNy84EeeRsdUZZneXUoZcBWWBtBB3ReKcPvcs9VvbuaDI7ifrqDbzJkzpCuQ8tVzw8C2Kn3yxGAd-VF4gmjuAB5uHL_ImUoixmniwArCr_MWcRq4qIpzPSTWk9STdXyLqrBF1/s640/full+in+window.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Yup, the infamous weekender. I'm making it for my sister. And I say making it because it's not quite done. I still need to make the lining, but I'm done for the day. All sewed out. This bag is a beast, and for today at least, it's eaten my brain.<br />
<br />
Actually what has eaten my brain is those instructions. Oy. I guess I've assembled a little too much ikea in my lifetime because instructions with lots of words make me go crosseyed. This bag has words coming out both ends. I basically gave up, looked at the photos and winged it. Who knows, I might have even sewn it right.<br />
<br />
I used the quilt as you go method that lots of people have been posting about, except without doing any patchwork. Pellon products are really hard to find here so I couldn't get the peltex called for in the pattern, and don't even really know what it's like to find a substitute. Oh, and I bought piping rather than making my own. Because it is way cheaper. I kind of hate the handles, but they're not as bad in person. The pale blue is just so blah. But I didn't have enough of anything else, so blue canvas it was. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj62JhHudbQY27Lw1H_OAN4gOIzT7hSQDYtZXfLgoT0SkPiRRSbOfCoe0s-mcnOTKdkBF8DG66mOvFZzCP36h8UAxn8IVS9skOv4nlsxGDDzHtkM8UOn7QIs7Bt42SVLCWdTlwM-1wWbK2J/s1600/weird+angle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj62JhHudbQY27Lw1H_OAN4gOIzT7hSQDYtZXfLgoT0SkPiRRSbOfCoe0s-mcnOTKdkBF8DG66mOvFZzCP36h8UAxn8IVS9skOv4nlsxGDDzHtkM8UOn7QIs7Bt42SVLCWdTlwM-1wWbK2J/s640/weird+angle.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Anyway, glad I tackled it, don't think I'd do it again. If I did I'd change the construction a bit. It's almost impossible to fit the side panels onto the top/bottom piece without going mental. Let's just say it's a good thing the husband is out of town today, because there were points in the sewing of this that if he'd tried talking to me, it wouldn't have been pretty!<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
When I met up with <a href="http://kateyz.blogspot.ca/">Ms KateyZ</a> to head down to Portland I fell head over heels with her <a href="http://www.noodle-head.com/2011/03/241-tote-pattern.html">241 tote</a>. Literally grabbing <a href="http://kateyz.blogspot.ca/2012/10/241-tote.html">it</a> out of her hands when we got into her car! I've seen a lot of these around online, but this was the first quilt as you go version. QAYG makes this bag rock!<br />
<br />
I've since made 3 and wanted to share a few tips I've come up with along the way.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZXhTGSpS_AAcsL6N4gaKGgyK_3XKr7YcO2aK9EXlzBqLCvqML9qCmPRiRt_xdFGuL52KbHEHCyG7a3E-I99NXGayyiQkwXRXreW0OjPEgrxAuLeEI0aGIMSFD1OgZMgXJSxaOJ8VT3RVe/s1600/quilt+as+you+go.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="427" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZXhTGSpS_AAcsL6N4gaKGgyK_3XKr7YcO2aK9EXlzBqLCvqML9qCmPRiRt_xdFGuL52KbHEHCyG7a3E-I99NXGayyiQkwXRXreW0OjPEgrxAuLeEI0aGIMSFD1OgZMgXJSxaOJ8VT3RVe/s640/quilt+as+you+go.jpg" title="new style quilt as you go, every pieces is quilted down individually" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
My first tip involves the general quilt as you go process. I've been noticing lately that the trend is to start with one scrap, quilt it down, then add another, quilt it down, etc (like my photo above). I did one bag this way but quickly realized that while it looks great, it's really time consuming. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin8LcvLKdYge5ifFXKl0ykJqDLVU027XWLIppCmJpU3nKoa4RzGrUj3vPiJmmQElhWRlb9FKw4IkHxJYaY65-iHfh81owRKJotO3zzDQ8QzYhvM01Qpc83tIVCyzGcCA3C6wu2JWoI_1gT/s1600/blue+qayg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin8LcvLKdYge5ifFXKl0ykJqDLVU027XWLIppCmJpU3nKoa4RzGrUj3vPiJmmQElhWRlb9FKw4IkHxJYaY65-iHfh81owRKJotO3zzDQ8QzYhvM01Qpc83tIVCyzGcCA3C6wu2JWoI_1gT/s640/blue+qayg.jpg" title="scraps are pieced together first then quilted down to the batting" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Instead I reverted to the traditional quilt as you go method, which is to sew together a block then quilt the block. In this case I wasn't sewing a traditional quilt block but rather a whole bunch of scraps into a slab of fabric roughly the shape of the pattern piece. Working this way is faster and can give a more random look.<br />
<br />
Quilt as you go results in some shrinkage of you batting and fabric, so tip number 2 is cut everything that will be quilted a bit bigger than you need then trim it down after the quilting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzLAXtOQCj2mqNqsoOAcX8-jPAJdCsOi47pxcYG_8__3hECAwTNGMZ6jyOYnLL4PK5UmQcs7t3ttzP2XhmqCzujZWomEsfuToKUqlwfDwUrOiD7VHnY89CsWlGRbxRmspwIpafalzVooFq/s1600/hexies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="hexie hexagon 241 toe purse" border="0" height="450" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzLAXtOQCj2mqNqsoOAcX8-jPAJdCsOi47pxcYG_8__3hECAwTNGMZ6jyOYnLL4PK5UmQcs7t3ttzP2XhmqCzujZWomEsfuToKUqlwfDwUrOiD7VHnY89CsWlGRbxRmspwIpafalzVooFq/s640/hexies.jpg" title="I'm working on a hexie 241 tote. i'll make the hexie piecing bigger than needed then cut it to size after quilting." width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
For this I used heavier cardstock pattern pieces that I'd cut out. If you think you might make more than one of these totes, I can't recommend a cardstock pattern enough!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJTyEy3KdErZb15hoeQntp2BZj1ZKiV5fJ3_nX9xMtQguKluDPd_tvz50J4TfsGoLAWHMDna_FQiIPngffMedcxCZPpuZcTkl1HQrDXyV0ZWwKTG5EHYiOY1TZ9MnSK6Z1uQlIQM8zEj0m/s1600/brown+tote.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJTyEy3KdErZb15hoeQntp2BZj1ZKiV5fJ3_nX9xMtQguKluDPd_tvz50J4TfsGoLAWHMDna_FQiIPngffMedcxCZPpuZcTkl1HQrDXyV0ZWwKTG5EHYiOY1TZ9MnSK6Z1uQlIQM8zEj0m/s640/brown+tote.jpg" title="don't look mum" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Remember when you're picking your colour scheme that it needs to go with your wardrobe! I'm giving the brown version to my mum, who wears a lot of black, often with bits of brown. The blue and grey hexie version is perfect for my wardrobe since they're the neutrals I wear most often (yes, blue is a neutral! Jeans, right?).<br />

<br />
This bag isn't very big, but it still can benefit from a bright liner. Why? So you can see things, of course! I've never understood black linings for purses. Everything gets lost.<br />
<br />
So, after all that, do you think you can tackle one yourself? If so, good news! The gracious <a href="http://www.noodle-head.com/">Anna from Noodlehead</a> is offering a free pattern to one of my readers! And to get you started I'm offering a pack of scraps in your choice of colours and 3 of the metallic snap closures called for in the pattern (you just need one but might want to make more than one bag). To enter to win leave a comment letting me know what colours you'd like to use for the bag or who you'd make one for. I'll draw a name on Friday evening. International entries are awesome. No guarantees of a pre-christmas delivery, though.<br />
<br />
adios yo,<br />

<br />
I'm finding myself drawn recently to palettes of bright plus black. Which is so strange! It's not like I decorate with black or even wear much of it (one black sweater + black long johns excepted). But for my sewing I'm wanting it more and more.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTnSqv9o8vH400xPY-z4o9KCCzIeTCx7jqqMFOtc11we9AKfbvHpEqSDn8shttDbdp72x8HIwtzx_BKeHAoLwfnOfYLIaQAMw0QhbmsHhdmb0o1S5LtJcc-u7cKn4hNFUnzd61fET3fdbt/s1600/corner+diamonds.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="427" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTnSqv9o8vH400xPY-z4o9KCCzIeTCx7jqqMFOtc11we9AKfbvHpEqSDn8shttDbdp72x8HIwtzx_BKeHAoLwfnOfYLIaQAMw0QhbmsHhdmb0o1S5LtJcc-u7cKn4hNFUnzd61fET3fdbt/s640/corner+diamonds.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Like this little wallhanging / mug rug / thingy. A few months ago that binding would have been hot pink. Today, black.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxiVRnd3eMFGOa_JfxxUDWkb9KdE87w1rT5lGN9-9nxeI98975CK-zf_SPC3N6U1q2xRGtpWMjfe9RdeP_6HaBIUpqiVhG-T38hLB5scLDvJahhyphenhyphenEgi71Uzn5sWqymNyfB1QrOoMTsGSfg/s1600/cat+patch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxiVRnd3eMFGOa_JfxxUDWkb9KdE87w1rT5lGN9-9nxeI98975CK-zf_SPC3N6U1q2xRGtpWMjfe9RdeP_6HaBIUpqiVhG-T38hLB5scLDvJahhyphenhyphenEgi71Uzn5sWqymNyfB1QrOoMTsGSfg/s640/cat+patch.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I went all out on the new cat bed. Lots of black, plus yellow, red, aqua and taupe. Without that black it would have been so boring, so primaries plus taupe. I mean, taupe, really? But add the black and suddenly it's edgy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzT15hJU1iMQnu0Wmhw9qoftSbNKdJ0_uv1V_b6YbJdqNTtcXqwYS3W239jY_vojN3yxllUe2KFb81hwGX05S91J8JCvEE_X4moDi08w1LEE9VGOifBnViQwjtNDp1VUy4M75QUsszx4Nk/s1600/cat+bed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzT15hJU1iMQnu0Wmhw9qoftSbNKdJ0_uv1V_b6YbJdqNTtcXqwYS3W239jY_vojN3yxllUe2KFb81hwGX05S91J8JCvEE_X4moDi08w1LEE9VGOifBnViQwjtNDp1VUy4M75QUsszx4Nk/s640/cat+bed.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Maybe even sexy.<br />
<br />

<br />
I am so happy to have finished my first do.good.stitches quilt! And just under deadline for Rachel's <a href="http://www.stitchedincolor.com/2012/11/celebrate-good-stitches.html">Celebrate good stitches</a> bash!<br />
<br />

<br />
This turned out just how I'd hoped. Bright but grounded, Unisex in a good way. And a fun, voyeuristic peek into the stashes of my fellow bee members!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO1dLjzorYyfnNp_9zfXzjp0lFkyHx3KA8pTMMPQU6bQ0JosXzei6xRsEz9ZjuAT3mshoCbDnWcCbOo7XKdY40SVPLzOnw-nJY3dpQNys8B0GwDId1-KAmbTF-Xx5iQwOOs8wP5tvnek-j/s1600/fuzz%2521.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO1dLjzorYyfnNp_9zfXzjp0lFkyHx3KA8pTMMPQU6bQ0JosXzei6xRsEz9ZjuAT3mshoCbDnWcCbOo7XKdY40SVPLzOnw-nJY3dpQNys8B0GwDId1-KAmbTF-Xx5iQwOOs8wP5tvnek-j/s640/fuzz%2521.jpg" title="yup, I have cats" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Now I just need to get it into the wash. Can you believe all that lint and cat hair?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_bCIbuYL_vCpkevkCoq5Lct20sgi0tgFPwme8JQOJCz7QeGzaElNmeEQ5mqfvIkn3L3txX0GHvheWnfz9wVeGnR46sx6Iff1paFsVTB7sByn25i5EowIFt5JpiYC9lV23IS0no00KljeY/s1600/mid.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="427" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_bCIbuYL_vCpkevkCoq5Lct20sgi0tgFPwme8JQOJCz7QeGzaElNmeEQ5mqfvIkn3L3txX0GHvheWnfz9wVeGnR46sx6Iff1paFsVTB7sByn25i5EowIFt5JpiYC9lV23IS0no00KljeY/s640/mid.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Did you notice the binding in the hairy shot? I had the worst time sewing that on! My machine started having tension seizures. It would go from fine to loops on the back, then I'd rethread and the thread would break. After spending about an hour stitching down 2 feet of binding I was about ready to hunt down a repair shop. But, guess what, it was the thread! Some old, bargain basement poly junk was making me rip out my hair. I switched to the So Fine I'd quilted with and the binding was done in 15 minutes. That bad thread now says hand basting only!<br />

Thanks so much to everyone for letting me vent yesterday and for being so supportive! To celebrate my freedom from sewing for the fair, today I did some sewing that was just for me. Ok, not really. It was for do.good.stitches. But the motivation was entirely selfish, I promise.<br />

Have you made any of these <a href="http://freshlypieced.blogspot.ca/2012/10/doing-cartwheels-free-block-pattern-for.html">cartwheel blocks</a> from Freshly Pieced? I'm not a huge paper piecing fan, but these were beyond fun. Fast and impactful, now that's great piecing in my book. So fun I made up that little gif animation. I don't think Pixar's going to be calling me anytime soon, but I've been wanting to try it out forever!<br />

I've had a ton of suggestions to put some of my craft fair leftovers on etsy, so I'm going to make the plunge back into online selling and give it a go. I just need a little bit of sun so I can take some more pics! Again, thanks so much for the encouragement!<br />
<br />
I'm also working on a little tutorial on using quilt as you go techniques for the 241 tote, and Anna from Noodlehead, awesome girl that she is, has offered a pattern for a giveaway! I should have that up later this week, so check back!<br />

I had (half) a table at a craft fair on Saturday and it was a complete flop. I should have known. The demographics of my area... the aesthetic... it's not an artsy town... my style's not a good fit. But I'd hoped - maybe in hindsight deluded myself - that people would see something fresh and think of their kids or grandkids or just their own desire for a pop of colour.<br />

But as <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00phwkz">Russell Howard</a> says, it's not all doom and gloom. I did have a great time chatting with customers and other members of my quilt guild. Um, and now I have handmade christmas presents for some of the people on my list!<br />

And none of the ornaments I made sold, so if I decide to have a christmas tree this year (I'm still hemming and hawing, I guess it will depend on the weather - I don't feel like cutting down a tree in the rain) I'll have some ornaments to hang on it. The four birds I sewed should bring us up to, oh, about 20. We're not a very christmassy couple.<br />

So yeah, a little bummed to start the week. It's not so much that I was hoping to make some cash (though extra in the kitty is always welcome). It's more that I loved each and every one of the things I made. And I felt that they were rejected. I was told that my art wasn't good enough.<br />

I'm not going to extend that to me not being good enough. I'm old enough and wise enough that I won't go there, though the giant pimple I woke up to Sunday morning is pushing me that way. I know that given a different venue things would have gone differently. So today I'm letting myself be disappointed. Tomorrow I'm going to get over myself and move on to new projects... and all the cleaning I kind of neglected while I was sewing up a storm!<br />

If you ever buy one of these beds (costco) be warned, the sewing job on them is really lousy making it awfully hard to just slap on some patchwork and batting and sew the pieces back together using the original fabric as pattern pieces/backing. Like I did. There is way more fudge in there than is good for anything, even a dog bed.<br />

As I said, you've probably<a href="http://pinsandbobbins.blogspot.ca/2012/08/hexy-baby.html"> seen this before</a>. The hexy baby quilt for my some-sort-of-cousin Penelope. Biggest thing I learned making this one? Let the recipients know it can go in the wash! I ran into Penny's mum and dad when I was visiting my mum and dad the other weekend. When I told them the quilt could go in the wash (gentle,cold) they were so relieved - I think it suddenly went from pretty accessory to something useful!<br />
<br />

So, the fest asks for a few technical specs, and the first one I'm going to have to guess on...<br />
<br />

<br />
I wasn't going to blog today but then I started folded laundry and realized that a little bit of watery fall light was coming through the window, perfectly accenting the quilting on my single girl.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTNzWdYvBJ7Hncjz3H3rbuFHIYbQVDueeGDlRxAuZPQds3heE1hbMYNJFMIlzdeGPRCOSPIqzFQGHxZBfpL3crOVq-PbZWS7Mo2CIkHwRWRpyEszFDL0_-RnULomUwavHm7NPfRr_Jwnrf/s1600/P1030105.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTNzWdYvBJ7Hncjz3H3rbuFHIYbQVDueeGDlRxAuZPQds3heE1hbMYNJFMIlzdeGPRCOSPIqzFQGHxZBfpL3crOVq-PbZWS7Mo2CIkHwRWRpyEszFDL0_-RnULomUwavHm7NPfRr_Jwnrf/s1600/P1030105.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
So here she is all quilted, bound, and done. Already covered in dirt in some spots thanks to the cats. And done. Did I mention done? So glad it's done.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGwCEVNtxgRuP6nwuOiY9FDavEvfFISCtV-LJiZrxLxKhfiNBIWT8Xx13LjAsHW2eTOZaqyVCuHp_5vgHaJcDq3qEs_LoGK3VbNekF8VY7a3CvhvzDEvIwgJ_Hjn88m3B3BttvD_Suvj-9/s1600/P1030108.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGwCEVNtxgRuP6nwuOiY9FDavEvfFISCtV-LJiZrxLxKhfiNBIWT8Xx13LjAsHW2eTOZaqyVCuHp_5vgHaJcDq3qEs_LoGK3VbNekF8VY7a3CvhvzDEvIwgJ_Hjn88m3B3BttvD_Suvj-9/s1600/P1030108.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
After much back and forth I went with the blue flea market fancy stripe. I realized that what had been holding me back from deciding was that while I love this quilt I just wasn't in love with it anymore. So consequently I didn't care all that much what it was bound with. So why the blue stripe? That's what I had the most of. Decision by default I guess.<br />
<br />
have an awesome weekend,<br />cChelseahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00909312890664785719noreply@blogger.com20tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1608706196061799145.post-89645529357858200872012-10-11T09:30:00.000-07:002012-10-11T09:30:25.708-07:00blue, white, and stumpedI have 2 major projects on the go right now, both of which I'm a little stumped on. The first is a craft fair coming up on the 24th of November. The second, and the one closer to my hear, is a quilt for my Baba (my maternal gran).<br />
<br />
It's bizarre how difficult I'm finding coming up with a pattern! I have some basic parameters and a definite idea of her style but marrying it to a quilt pattern is hard. She wants something blue and white, something classic and not too busy. Baba's decorating style is quite streamlined, lots of mid century pieces in natural tones, lots of books, lots of art.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-c_3Et0-zgmhMAHTI0ys50SbtfHX03_lB2htHmeo1jndQbfV7Vk1E41lq5wXMIspahV0KTkt4yqtL7I3jNsK_2lF1gkcuKgPpgUcZdqqxwATSxlAg5QBz59J5ygw86ERfFa2EwzBC-qvr/s1600/P1030103.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-c_3Et0-zgmhMAHTI0ys50SbtfHX03_lB2htHmeo1jndQbfV7Vk1E41lq5wXMIspahV0KTkt4yqtL7I3jNsK_2lF1gkcuKgPpgUcZdqqxwATSxlAg5QBz59J5ygw86ERfFa2EwzBC-qvr/s1600/P1030103.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
So far I'm really drawn to this orange peel pattern from Denyse Schmidt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSnD6Qnn9kyiop8hRGdUnr_BUJuTYOx2pto-i7Taq5uB1hrPtg-JI9qcV_c9tfcUF7s7jTIUFSoB1RuvvCRBUAWrRuzoo3VFihK-CUPSUNBoipssHTjffn4XI2fU434V2cMcSyvP_jdqGq/s1600/P1030099.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSnD6Qnn9kyiop8hRGdUnr_BUJuTYOx2pto-i7Taq5uB1hrPtg-JI9qcV_c9tfcUF7s7jTIUFSoB1RuvvCRBUAWrRuzoo3VFihK-CUPSUNBoipssHTjffn4XI2fU434V2cMcSyvP_jdqGq/s1600/P1030099.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
It's graphic but traditional. The white areas will give me a lot of range for quilting. The circles remind me a series of prints she's bought recently from a Native west coast artist. And it will definitely be a challenge since I haven't done a lot of applique.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIYK9bg01dFnnTdA-e-tPcYDBGIHHDQ3tbJq9HyOQkZiI4oIFAiiQ6SMI4KhTPPnQJLpomvX3E-nU2tNQPht9DtI7IGH8Mk0u70KmXH2nKbec2KCFqE_W_-1qcJIMMGQMuIzuQh3IqOCho/s1600/P1030104.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIYK9bg01dFnnTdA-e-tPcYDBGIHHDQ3tbJq9HyOQkZiI4oIFAiiQ6SMI4KhTPPnQJLpomvX3E-nU2tNQPht9DtI7IGH8Mk0u70KmXH2nKbec2KCFqE_W_-1qcJIMMGQMuIzuQh3IqOCho/s1600/P1030104.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
But then I'm also drawn to the simplicity of something made from hsts. I think this would be stunning, especially using blues all across the value scale.<br />
<br />
I know Baba will love whatever I make her. I just have to get it right for myself, you know?<br />
<br />

<br />
And today we're visiting the woods of British Columbia, Canada. Almost my back yard, in fact. We're heading to <a href="http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/little_qualicum_falls/">Little Qualicum Falls provincial park</a>, located on Vancouver Island, about a 10 minute walk from my house. It's a gorgeous campsite but doesn't have a lot of the modern conveniences, like wifi or showers, like some do, so if you ever find yourself there in desperate need of some civilization, give me a shout! I'll happily trade hot water and fluffy towels for fat quarters.<br />
<br />
What it does have is some stunning scenery.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">all of the above were taken by the husbeast. and the final one is kind of cheating since it's downriver out of the park.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
As you can see, not my usual palette! But who's not inspired by the nature around them? So with the greys and vibrant greens and deep blues of the pictures in mind, I raided my stash and came up with these.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzcdtGBXWanR7T3ueFQxwAZ5NPaDCyp7bYUan3cREiu25DQ38coJXWs3p4PU8vH_5riy8yGPvaUMEBuCz5r1ztr-mTGH3u9kLJM9Q4ADnsVgN1KM7Y_x6J3eOKepTT3sGYgxNg7YxWWf-9/s1600/palette.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzcdtGBXWanR7T3ueFQxwAZ5NPaDCyp7bYUan3cREiu25DQ38coJXWs3p4PU8vH_5riy8yGPvaUMEBuCz5r1ztr-mTGH3u9kLJM9Q4ADnsVgN1KM7Y_x6J3eOKepTT3sGYgxNg7YxWWf-9/s1600/palette.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
So what did that inspire? A tea towel of course!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRjT5xRr1ySdsEC0SoquSxn4u2r2gfBO-xgh78y0G3y5nxq9XDhyLJpVZnvKlMNWwQqu6YkiTZ73ucaCTERY2dmfQlvHPQN4BB8llGINTaR4Bg64l1aDc7yao-sz41f-kwLyHM5MYfLbQC/s1600/towel+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="english paper piecing diamond hexagons" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRjT5xRr1ySdsEC0SoquSxn4u2r2gfBO-xgh78y0G3y5nxq9XDhyLJpVZnvKlMNWwQqu6YkiTZ73ucaCTERY2dmfQlvHPQN4BB8llGINTaR4Bg64l1aDc7yao-sz41f-kwLyHM5MYfLbQC/s1600/towel+2.jpg" title="paper pieced tea towels" /></a></div>
<br />
I love these hexie diamonds and one day I'll make a quilt using the traditional star layout. But I thought isolating them as diamonds was a fun modern approach.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPoMHfvIB1DSM9dTfDJyqlYPNbtN77VOiRuaW-Yvf6YsEoURrecpNpmb9FXw80QoAbd35yJcQGw0DRTWOPj5RPpkzzuFTy-ZlM9zExw57z4brhQmKTyXIpiwrBPdahMHkhfVND4pV7VdWf/s1600/towel+one.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="paper pieced diamond hexagons" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPoMHfvIB1DSM9dTfDJyqlYPNbtN77VOiRuaW-Yvf6YsEoURrecpNpmb9FXw80QoAbd35yJcQGw0DRTWOPj5RPpkzzuFTy-ZlM9zExw57z4brhQmKTyXIpiwrBPdahMHkhfVND4pV7VdWf/s1600/towel+one.jpg" title="paper piecing tea towels" /></a></div>
<br />
I used ½" hexies, which are admittedly a bit fiddly, cutting 16 for each diamond. I sewed 2 lengths of five hexies and 2 of three, then sewed them together. Then I appliqued the outside edges to the towel, slipped in a piece of fabric for the center, then appliqued down the inside of the hexies. Altogether it was a couple of <strike>hours</strike> nights (I'm not that fast!) of tv viewing, so not too bad!<br />
<br />
