the travelling pic stitch blog hop

Yay, it's my stop on the tour!

And today we're visiting the woods of British Columbia, Canada.  Almost my back yard, in fact.  We're heading to Little Qualicum Falls provincial park, located on Vancouver Island, about a 10 minute walk from my house.  It's a gorgeous campsite but doesn't have a lot of the modern conveniences, like wifi or showers, like some do, so if you ever find yourself there in desperate need of some civilization, give me a shout!  I'll happily trade hot water and fluffy towels for fat quarters.

What it does have is some stunning scenery.

all of the above were taken by the husbeast.  and the final one is kind of cheating since it's downriver out of the park.
As you can see, not my usual palette!  But who's not inspired by the nature around them?  So with the greys and vibrant greens and deep blues of the pictures in mind, I raided my stash and came up with these.

So what did that inspire?  A tea towel of course!

english paper piecing diamond hexagons

I love these hexie diamonds and one day I'll make a quilt using the traditional star layout.  But I thought isolating them as diamonds was a fun modern approach.

I used ½" hexies, which are admittedly a bit fiddly, cutting 16 for each diamond.  I sewed 2 lengths of five hexies and 2 of three, then sewed them together.  Then I appliqued the outside edges to the towel, slipped in a piece of fabric for the center, then appliqued down the inside of the hexies.  Altogether it was a couple of hours nights (I'm not that fast!) of tv viewing, so not too bad!

If you haven't visited yet, make sure you check out yesterday's post at DJCoolbear, then tomorrow hop on over to fabricmutt.

And don't forget the link up party November 30th.  Prizes will be awarded!!

Sponsored by Paperpieces.com, Fabricworm, Pink Castle Fabrics ,  Marmalade Fabrics, the Fat Quarter Shop, WantItNeedItQuilt, and Aurifil.

Rose star blocks

I'm having so much fun piecing these, I thought I'd post some shots.  There's nothing quite like hand sewing on cold dark nights.

Throw in bright colours and what's not to love?  I almost wish I'd based mine on a larger hexagon, though.  Some of those pieces are awfully small and keep getting lost in the folds of my lap quilt!

I've drafted a few sizes of the pattern using the instructions from Summerfete, but don't know how to upload them!  I tried google docs, but they were automatically resized and I couldn't figure out how to print them to the correct size.  Hmmm...
