Made in Cherry Quilt Along - quilting ideas

Most quilt patterns end with "quilt as desired".  Helpful, right?  Not so much!  So this week I thought I'd share some ideas I've been playing with for quilting my top.

I love how graphic this is.  Simple straight lines, bold quilting to match a bold pattern.  And can you imagine it with some gorgeous hand quilting in between the lines of machine quilting, done in bright shades of perle cotton?

Something like this?  Ok, now I'm re-thinking my whole plan to do fancy quilting!

  2. I love this! I was thinking of hand quilting it and really love these ideas. Especially with the colored thread in your last design, I think these are going to look really awesome! Thanks!

  3. Ohhhh, Ahhh! Great quilting ideas. I like the first one. I thought about doing an all over meander at first since the blocks are so linear. Then I thought about doing curves around the inside line of the squares. Hmmm? I like your idea better. Cutting background fabric and sewing today...Yeah!

  4. That looks great. I have been planning to do lines just like you have above for the solid background. I am undecided on the center. I would like to follow the star there too, but am worried about puckers--starting in the middle terrifies me if I am doing a star shape!

  5. The pattern definitely feels like there needs to be something in those huge swaths of background, doesn't it? I considered hand quilted star shapes in the 4 corners myself with a diagonal grid covering the pieced star...Still building my back. It takes a while to piece an 85" square from chunks!

  6. Thanks for the mock up! That's how I was thinking of quilting mine, but I'm never sure if what I have in my head will actually look good on fabric.

  7. Love this idea, esp with the perle cotton accent. Any tips on starting/stopping quilt lines in the middle of the quilt? Looks like that's what we are doing with the straight lines in the patchwork blocks.

    1. This is such a good question that I thought I'd answer here, too. What I do is start my lines with tiny little stitches, just up from zero. Then over the first ¼" of quilting I ratchet up to the length I want to use. At the end of the line I just do the reverse. You can also tie off your thread ends and bury them in the quilt but that's just so much work!
