colleen's quilt!

pins & bobbins

Colleen was one of the winners in my Chelsea Quilts for me Giveaway, and I'm so happy to say that her top is finally quilted and will be off to her soon.  This was a challenging one, but I think the effort was worth it and I hope Colleen is happy.

As you can see, the design is very traditional, so I wanted to work with traditional quilting motifs to complement the piecing.  I immediately knew that I wanted to quilt feathers in the burgundy sashing.  It's really hard to see them because of the dark colour, but I know they're there!

Colleen asked that the central medallion be outlined then echoed.  Rather than filling the space with echoes, which could get boring I decided to just echo the applique twice then fill with stippling.  I'm glad I went with that decision - echoing using a longarm is a lot harder than you would think!

For the outer pieced border Colleen had asked that I stitch a pattern reflecting the applique style then echo it.  Not at all something I would have come up with on my own!  But I think it works for the quilt and hopefully Colleen loves it.

Finally, the blocks.  I wanted to do something here that felt traditional and fit with the rest of the quilt, but also had a bit more of a modern touch to reflect my own style.  So a modified feather wreath fills the blocks.

This quilt really makes me wish I had a big design wall for taking photos!  It's so big it's impossible to get a full shot of it!

Thanks for looking!
