blogger's quilt festival - entry #580

Amy's Creative Side

I haven't been around for ages, and now that I'm back what do I do?  Spam you with stuff you've seen before!  I just haven't really been sewing and I haven't felt like blogging much.  But I'm hoping entering the blogger's quilt festival will be the kick in the pants I need to get going again!

As I said, you've probably seen this before.  The hexy baby quilt for my some-sort-of-cousin Penelope.  Biggest thing I learned making this one?  Let the recipients know it can go in the wash!  I ran into Penny's mum and dad when I was visiting my mum and dad the other weekend.  When I told them the quilt could go in the wash (gentle, cold) they were so relieved - I think it suddenly went from pretty accessory to something useful!

So, the fest asks for a few technical specs, and the first one I'm going to have to guess on...

Size: I think it's about 40x40, but it could be bigger, I didn't write down the size before giving it away
Designed by: based on a pattern from Ali of a²w, tweaked by me
Quilted by: me

hexy baby

 hexagon baby quilt

Oh, yeah, work it!  You're hexy, baby.

Now that that's out of my system, how about a little quilt info?  I fell in love with this quilt on a²w and since a cousin had conveniently had a little girl, well, all the more reason to make one.  I decided to switch things up a bit and rather than have the hexagons all in a row to scatter them across the quilt top, kind of like cubist beach balls.

And then I quilted the crap out of it.

I'll be the first to admit that it might be too much.  I don't want anyone to think that this quilt is only for display, for "good".  I want it to be played on and dragged around.  More than anything I want a call from Emma in a few years telling me that Penelope has started to wear her quilt out, can I make her another one.  That will make me really happy.

Saturday I'm heading to Victoria for my grandmother's birthday.  None of us are quite sure if she's turning 98 or 99, but I'm thinking it's kind of rude to ask.  I'm hoping I'll also get to meet Penny then, too, if her mum and dad aren't too exhausted.  She was a premie (like me) so August has been kind of insane.  But she's home now and putting on weight so things are looking up!  She won't be dragging her quilt through the mud anytime soon, obviously, but you know, once babies start growing, they tend to keep doing it!

My backs are normally pretty boring, but because this was pretty small I thought I'd break out some of the good stuff - fmf!  With some salt air and outfoxed thrown in, too.  I think they all play pretty well together!
