i want to sew some clothes

Specifically this pattern.  The Tova top from Wiksten.  But I'm  a little scared.  The photos I've come across online are gorgeous, but... dude, everything looks good when you're a size tiny.  Has anyone with some boobage made this thing?  Of the rack I take a 14, but I'm an f cup, which means even then things don't always fit right, or at all.  I realize that if I start sewing clothes again I'm going to have to embrace the fba (full bust adjust) but I don't want to adjust the whole shebang.  So, anyone tackled this in the xl range?  Is it worth my $10 or should I just save it for quilting fabric.

  1. I've had my eye on this top for some time, but I haven't taken the plunge for precisely the same reason. Sigh.

  2. I'm a G cup and I have avoided that pattern because tops from the store with that sort of straight and high placket have been unflattering. Getting a reduction in the Winter and thinking of trying it then :)

  3. Chelsea, that fabric is amazing. Maybe you could just drape it around yourself. ha

I'm a bit bigger on top too (D) which is partly why sewing clothes doesn't appeal to me. I used to try to knit sweaters and they never turned out how I hoped, I think partly the boob factor.

I wish you all the best though, that pattern looks lovely and the fabric would be perfect for it.

  4. I'm a 32G and have avoided this pattern precisely because it will go out for my boobs then hang straight down, leaving me looking like I'm sporting maternity wear (of course I now know a whole pile of patterns to try should I ever happen to find myself pregnant ;o) ) Something that gathers again below the bust will be more flattering for you :o)

  5. I have big boobs too, and I would avoid any seam along the chest. BUT you could drop the seam below the chest and that might make a cute top!

  6. I agree! I'm also super curious about this pattern but have some chest to work with too...if you go for it it'll be an experiment many will benefit from!! Great fabric too.

  7. I'm keeping an eye on your decision, because I too want this top, but feel like my bust might be too big too! I have the pattern bookmarked, keep us posted!

  8. I had a conversation about Wiksten and Tova with a friend (well-endowed, like my 30DD self), and we agreed that these lovely patterns are best for those with more willowy frames. I don't think either one has bust darts, for instance.

I now have made enough attempts at garments from quilting cotton to know that they can be quite unflattering on a curvy figure: you might be able to snatch a good still photo, but in action the cotton "sticks" to the bumps/curves/boobs/bum. There's no swish-swish-flow...which is what I would want from a light cotton summer tank or dress. So I use quilting cottons only for toddler dresses or summer skirts for myself. For tops and dresses I'm looking at cotton lawn or knits...if I every get around to sewing more for myself, that is :)

  9. By the way, while your post is drawing all the busty quilters out there, I'll share my online find of the year: the UK website Brastop. Oh. My. God. The size range they carry is amazing, the bras are gorgeous and a tiny fraction of what I was paying here in Toronto. The shipping is free and super fast (5 days to Canada??? What????). I have found it worthwhile to order a bunch and then return what doesn't fit. This is totally addictive stuff...but it's fun to share/enable. -- Enchanted Bobbin, same as post above (I have two gmail accounts, vestiges of blogger confusion two years ago; sorry for muddle)

  10. Thanks for the tip on brastop! And I agree with all others here, avoid the chest seam like the plague unless you use a lovely drape-y voile or lawn fabric. Save your lovely FMF for non-clohting or make a skirt out of it!

  11. erin harris @ houseonhill road has made it, but her bust isn't as large. she sent me this link: http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/2008/05/how-to-measurements/ i have a somewhat busty self and i haven't been happy with any top i've made yet... but i hold onto the hope that i could. the above comment about cotton sticking certainly has me thinking....

  12. Like everyone above, have avoided the tova for the same reason, looks amazing on some but concerned I'd just look pregnant.

  13. Oh girl, I hear ya. I'm going to agree with the rest - it's not for the well endowed.

  14. I don't sew clothes for myself because it's such a pain in the ass to move darts and add all the extra fabric I need to contain my 40F situation.
What the heck do girls like Pam Anderson do? Oh right, they just wear bikinis and crochet thread.....

  15. I love you for asking that question. A friend and I were discussing the same thing and decided it would probably be better left to the twigs!

  19. McCalls pattern 6364 is a pattern that I have in my stash that's very similar to the Tova pattern. I have not sewn it yet but I'm planning to. Doesn't seem like the 38DD will fit into that pattern XL. The McCall's pattern is a larger size pattern.
