lets get acquainted blog hop!

Whoops!  It's my day on the blog hop, and here I am, doing things late as usual.  So, a few things about me, some related to quilting, some not:

my hills n hollers quilt, blogged back in Jan 2011

I get migraines, which are super annoying and the reason why today's post is late!

the last quilt I finished on my regular machine before getting my longarm "the beast" in december

One of my husband's favorite sayings is "there's a right way, a wrong way, and a Rogers way".  My last name is Rogers, his isn't.  But come on, if you can do something half assed and it still works out ok, why use your full ass.  I think quilting is about the only part of my life where I don't apply this principle.  Sure I'll fudge on my piecing and not fix missed bits when I bind by machine, but when I'm actually quilting I go all out.  It's just too much fun to not do right!

Denyse Schmidt is one of my heros.  single girl top completed march 2011.  still waiting to be quilted!

I love pink.  I think most of my quilts have some pink in them and a big chunk of my wardrobe is pink, too.  Could have something to do with growing up in the 70s and wearing lots of hand-me-downs from my mail cousins.  I had a styling all brown outfit with suede patches on the knees and elbows!  And I was bald until I was 6 so everyone thought I was a boy.

pinkety pink pink

I started quilting in 11th grade and have been doing it off and on since then, which is a loooooong time!  See above re 70s childhood.  Anyone else have their mind blown when suddenly they had to write 1980 on schoolwork?

a quilt my mum started before I was born and that I work on occasionally.  Those flash cards were how I learned math!

I'm a total potty mouth though I try not to swear on the blog because I know not everyone rolls that way.  One of these days though I'm going to make a quilt that's all swear words and post pics on the interbits.

my dog Beatrice decided to wear my undies.  yeah, that didn't result in any %$@*&

My favorite tv show ever was The Wire.  Just trust me, though, if you watch it, don't try to talk like you're from B'more.  Especially if like me you're from the west coast of Canada (I think we have the flattest, least stressed, syllable jamming accent in the english speaking world) you'll just sound like a tool.

I love hand sewing while watching tv.  It's a great way to get through horror movies, too.

I have no idea how to correctly use semi-colons.  And my spelling can be a little wack a doodle because I went to French immersion for elementary school, so while English is my first spoken language, I learned to read and write in French first.  Unfortunately I've lost most of my vocab, though I can walk into a Paris patisserie and order one hell of a spread!

I used to be a pastry chef and would often take inspiration from fabric.  recognize this Amy Butler print?

I remember when there was only one online quilting site!

I have a toilet and sink in my sewing room.  Oh, yeah, beat that babe!

My biggest quilting tip is if you're not feeling it, don't force yourself to keep working on it.  Where's the fun in that?  You wouldn't keep eating your meal if it tasted like poop, so why force yourself to finish a quilt that is looking like it.  Oh, and hydrate.

lone star made march this year
My biggest blogging tip is to take off the comment verification thingy,  and if you don't know if it's on or not, ask someone to check for you.  Spam messages are pretty funny anyway and blogger does an awesome job of weeding them out.  Oh, and if someone leaves a comment and they have a blog, go check theirs out and comment back.  I've gotten to meet some pretty awesome chicas that way.

the happiness circle of do.good.stitches' october block
That about sums it up for today.  If you come back tomorrow I'll be posting a tutorial for the block above.  I meant to have it up today, but see that first point.  Which reminds me, another great tip, if you get bad headaches too, advil liquicaps work way faster if you bite them.  They taste like death, but it's worth it.

take it easy yo,
c

  6. oh chelsea. i love you! you are the best! i wish we lived next door to each other and could yell profanities at each other every day. and you could make me a cake every week and i would eat it and say how pretty it tasted. and your dog could come over to my house and try on my underwear too! and i could come sew with you and could totally go pee right in front of you and if you got all mad i would say;(not sure if i should use a colon, semi colon, or comma right there) "what! what do you expect me to do... you have a perfectly fine toilet right here!"

    xo youarethebest!

  10. Oh my gosh! My long lost twin! I think you may have actually been the twin that was born first, but I swear like a sailor too (I pre-warn people), I have migraines, as a matter of fact I just had one for the past 3 days (sucky). I am a bit newer to quilting, and I don't know what The Wire is, but golly I love pink (wearing it now), It is nice to really meet you!!

  11. Hooray for a fellow fan of The Wire/cat lady/pink lover/aficionado of colorful language! And I love your Single Girl quilt.

  12. Urgh, I have to take liquicaps for things because of allergies, but can't imagine biting into them - feel better!

As for writing 1980, well, I may have been a brilliant child, but my manual dexterity at the age of 1 was limited ;o)

My mother hated pink and purple (still does) so I was dressed in nice bright ambigious colours. Oh, and brown. My hair also didn't grow for years other than round in more and more curls, so I got to rock the top knot thing from age 2-4 so I could see where I was going...

Glad to see the loo has bog roll ;o)

  15. I already knew I liked you, but now I know that I REALLY like you. Too bad you're a few provinces away....

And yes, I remember very clearly a Time magazine cover featuring Brooke Shields and headline, "The 80s Look." Oy.

  16. You are a complete nutbird - I'm totally signing up to follow :-)

  17. I get migraines too. Blech! Your sewing room obviously rocks with plumbing!!!!

  18. Hi nice to meet you! You're too funny! I figured out that nitrates/nitrites & MSG trigger really bad headaches. Don't know if they are migraines but I don't move around much when I have them and say some of the @#$% in my head at least if I have to do anything. We used to have a dog that would chew the crotch out of the underwear waiting it's turn at the washer. With 4 kids that wasn't a good thing.

  19. ROFL your post made me smile a lot of times ...
well except for the migraine. I sincerely hope that has ^%&^&$ right off.

Love that block and looking forward to the tute

  21. Hello Chelsea, it was nice reading about you, I had some chuckles along the way :) You have to get yourself together and quilt that single girl quilt! HAVE to! :) I love the way it looks. And LOVE pink, I'm totally with you on that one! The wedding cake, oh my goodness... I used to work in a french bakery where they made some pretty awesome cakes, but none of them came even close to yours. Amazing! Your pebble and feather quilting looks beautiful, I'd love to see the whole quilt. Thanks for participating in the blog hop, I had fun with you! :)

  22. Hi! I've been following for a bit but it's nice to learn more about you! Yes this is not a swear-friendly community. I totally censor myself, too, haha!

  23. You make some gorgeous projects! Just lovely. I feel for you with the migraines, I'm a sufferer too :0( Luckily I've got mine under control and have gone from 3-4 a week to just one a month, I totally empathise.

  24. Ok two things, your sink and toilet are the most fantastic sewing room additions I've ever seen. And, if you were bald today, I'm going to guess that NO ONE would mistake you for a boy.....

~sorry that you get headaches, I'm so fortunate in that I so rarely do, not even mild ones
~I was wondering recently what type of "regular" machine you use - now I know!
~I love pink too, and I never used to. For me I think it comes from living with 3 males!
~I'm not a potty mouth by any stretch of the imagination so I appreciate it when other people are sensitive to that!
~Your dog is hilarious, and the bathroom/sewing room cracked me up
~your lone star quilt might be one of my favourite things ever. It's gorgeous.

Okay, now off to check out your tutorial which I just noticed is up.....

  29. Nice to meet you on the blog hop. I don't know which is the coolest, the beautiful cake or the toilet in the sewing room! OK the cake wins, but only by a little!

  30. You are hilarious, Chelsea! Your single girl quilt is SO beautiful and you are much further along than me. I was part of the single girl quilt along and I only have one block completely pieced so far. I remember celebrating 1980 and figuring out how old I would be when it turned 2000 (25, SO old!) It was great to get to know you better!

  31. So lovely to get to know you a little better Chelsea. Love your Single girl quilt and the quilting on the lone star is so beautiful.

  32. I feel like word verification is a modern day torture device and a quick way to make someone go insane. I sometimes want to go back and edit my comments and curse folks about having word verification. But I TRY to be nice.

  33. Nice to "meet" you! I love the cake, and the toilet in the sewing room is fab, talk about maximising sewing time! Your quilting is just amazing, especially on the Lone Star. You should take a look here: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=sailor%20mouth%20swap - I think you'll like some of the projects!

  34. OK, you win. There is NO way that I could beat a toilet and a sink in my sewing room!

  35. Nice to meet you. I'm jealous you have a longarm. I've been struggling this week with qulting an old UFO. Love to design and piece but not so much loving the quilting part. I see you have kitty helper just like mine. Always wanting to help at the least opportune times. Your cake is gorgeous by the way.

  39. Hi Chelsea! You have a fresh approach to blogging and I love your honesty! I love a blog that really reflects the person behind it. Your quilting is beautiful too!

By the way, use a semi-colon to separate two sentences that are related to each other, but could stand alone as well; it's not always easy to tell the difference! (Like that one!)

  40. I really like your quilting tip: if you're not feeling it, don't keep working on it. Several years ago, I was working on a quilt that I dreaded! Too many tiny pieces and lots of applique....I also was not a fan of the colors. I put the blocks in a bag and shoved it to the back of the closet. I found the bag of blocks and was pretty impressed with how much I had actually stitched. The second time around I really liked the colors and didn't mind working on the quilt. It hangs proudly in my dining room

  42. I'm a late visitor from the Blog Hop, just catching up. This: " if you can do something half assed and it still works out ok, why use your full ass" is hilarious. I also fully support your cuss word quilt plan--it would be pretty funny to watch it hit the mommy blogs and for s**t to be collectively flipped. ;-) I'm not much of a potty mouth myself, but I fully acknowledge that it has its time and place! Additionally, I think that humor quilting is an underutilized genre.

Nice to meet you--I'll poke around some more. :)

  43. My spelling is a bit wacky too as is my speech! I grew up in Montreal and was thrown into French Elementary as a child as a result I still say "close the lights" which confuses my husband and children. Really I should know better that it would just be easier to it it myself :o)

  44. LOL! I love your blog hop post :-) My college degree is actually in French. Of course, it doesn't get a lot of mileage as a quilter in Central Texas. Oops ;-) I had so much fun cracking up with your blog post today!

  45. Gads you are so wonderful! I loved reading this entire post! :)

I can't wait to see your creations with some colorful words. :)

  46. I am so behind in blog reading, but I'm glad I didn't miss this one. Really enjoyed getting to know you better. If we could be friends in person, I could learn SO much from your quilting. That last FMQed quilt is amazing, piecing, fabrics and quilting. Love!

Also wanted to say that your do. Good block is fab. Thanks for joining us!!!
